On Saturday 15th August, the Acti-Snack Lough Neagh Triathlon, hosted by Hi Elbow Triathlon Club, will once again descend upon its namesake’s shores in Ballyronan, Co. Londonderry.

With somewhere approaching 400 athletes on the starting line, this is sure to be one of the most highly anticipated and hotly contested events on the Triathlon Ireland National Series circuit. The event was awarded national status due to its increasing popularity with Triathlon Ireland members, as well as the noted professionalism of its organisers. The Sprint distance event will be comprised of a 750m swim, 20km cycle and 5km run.

Ian Lyle, Race Director, commented,

“Once again, it’s fantastic to see the Acti-Snack Lough Neagh Triathlon sell out so far in advance of the race itself. It really speaks volumes about the scale and quality of the event we put on here. The local community in the Ballyronan area have been great supporters of the event in years gone past, and with the inclusion of the children’s event on the Friday evening, we are helping to spread the reach and impact of this truly unique sport.”

2015 sees the continuation of the event’s partnership with sports nutrition snack range Acti-Snack, providing competitors with a supercharged range of natural dried fruit, nuts and seeds, which combine health, nutrition and taste to help meet nutritional objectives.

Ann Woods, Product Development Manager, Acti-Snack, said:

“With carbs for fuel, protein for recovery and a mix of proteins, healthy fats and carbohydrates for endurance, the Acti-Snack range complements the challenge of the Lough Neagh Triathlon perfectly. We’re proud to be continuing our partnership with the Triathlon again this year and are looking forward to witnessing the impressive range of talent on display.”
This year’s event will showcase some of the finest triathletes across Ireland. As well as playing host to the National Series race, there will also be a Super Series wave which incorporates those athletes in the upper echelons of the national circuit.

Spectators in attendance will be fortunate to witness the skill of European Games and Commonwealth Games athlete Russell White of Banbridge; the prowess of Commonwealth Games representative Harry Speers (Invictus Triathlon Club, Belfast); the blistering speed of rising Irish international James Edgar (Lisburn Triathlon Club); and the experience of European medallist Mark Diamond (also Invictus).

On the women’s side, hosts Hi Elbow can rely on the formidable duo of Irish World Championship representative Adele Neill, and double Commonwealth Games athlete Heather Foley, to challenge for top honours. Keeping them on their toes will be European Duathlon Champion Sonia Knox (Triangle Triathlon Club); winner of Belfast Titanic Triathlon Champion, Caoimhe Ni Mhurchu (Sligo Triathlon Club); and Irish international Laura Tighe (J2P, Sligo).

Ballyronan residents are accepting the challenge of competing, and not just watching the action.  Locals Adrian Glendinning, Joe McVey and Graeme Evans will certainly be counting on the vocal support of friends and family to spur them across the finish line.

As well as the Sprint distance race, a Super Sprint event will be held. The 300m swim, 10km cycle and 2.5km run is a perfect introduction to triathlon, with many entrants picking up the “triathlon bug” after completing the event!

The course is a multi-lapped, spectator friendly course, designed to offer competitors as much safety as possible whilst giving spectators a great view of the action.  The swim section will be a triangular course starting and finishing on the beach.  The cycle course takes in the Ballynagarve Road, Loves Road, Carraloan Road and Ballyronan Road.  The run course will take in the Ballyronan “Woodland Trail” before covering an out-and-back route along the Ballynagarve Road.  Delays will be expected in Ballyronan and on the course between midday and 2pm.
