What is protein needed for?

The basic structure of protein is a chain of amino acids. You need protein in your diet to help your body repair cells and make new ones. Protein also:

– Boosts metabolism
– Makes hormones and enzymes,
– Keeps you fuller for longer
– Builds and repairs muscle, hair and skin

Protein per day?

The National Academy of Medicine recommends that adults get a minimum of 0.8g of protein for every kilogram of body weight per day.

Endurance and strength athletes need up to double the protein intake to repair and build muscles, support recovery, prevent muscle loss and meet increased energy demands during training.

Source of protein

A ‘source of protein’ claim can only be made if at least 12% of the energy value of the food is from protein. One gram of protein provides four calories / 17KJ of energy.

High in Protein

A claim of ‘high in protein’ may only be made where at least 20% of the energy value of the food is provided by protein.
